How an Amír Harassed a Sleeping Man Into Whose Mouth a Snake Had Gone.



 عاقلی بر اسب می‏آمد سوار

در دهان خفته‏ای می‏رفت مار

Eng: A wise man was riding along (at the moment when) a snake was going into the mouth of a man asleep.

Urdu: Ek Dana aadmi ka kahin se gujar hua usne dekha saanp ek sote huye aadmi ke mun mein ja raha tha.


آن سوار آن را بدید و می‏شتافت

تا رماند مار را فرصت نیافت‏

Eng: The rider saw that, and was hurrying to scare away the snake, (but) he got no chance (of doing so).

Urdu: Sawaar ne dekha aur saanp ko darane ke liye bada lekin usay aisa karne ka mauqa na mila .


چون که از عقلش فراوان بد مدد

چند دبوسی قوی بر خفته زد

Eng: Since he had an abundant supply of intelligence, he struck the sleeper several powerful blows with a mace.

Urdu: Chun-kay wo bahut dana-O-zaheen tha, is ne soye hue ko gadhay se kayi zor daar zarbein maari .


برد او را زخم آن دبوس سخت

زو گریزان تا به زیر یک درخت‏

Eng: The strokes of the hard mace drove him in flight from him (the rider) to beneath a tree.

Urdu : Sakht zarbon se betaab wo sawaar se door ek darakht ke neechay bhag kar kar pahuncha.


سیب پوسیده بسی بد ریخته

گفت از این خور ای به درد آویخته‏

Eng: There were many rotten apples had dropped (from the tree): he said, “Eat of these, O you in the grip of pain!”

Urdu : Wahan Bohat se sade(spoiled) saib (apple) pare huye the : is (sawar) ne kaha dhamkate huye ye saib mein se khao! " 


سیب چندان مر و را در خورد داد

کز دهانش باز بیرون می‏فتاد

Eng: He gave him so many apples to eat that they were falling out of his mouth again.

Urdu: Is ne zabran usay khanay ke liye itnay saib diye ke woh is ke mun se gir rahay the.



بانگ می‏زد کای امیر آخر چرا

قصد من کردی تو نادیده جفا

Eng: He was crying, “O Amír, pray, why have you set on me when you have not suffered injury?

Urdu: Wo rote huye kah raha tha ae Amir aap mere piche kyun pade hai jab maine aap ka kuch nahin bigada.


گر ترا ز اصل است با جانم ستیز

تیغ زن یک بارگی خونم بریز

Eng: If you have an inveterate and mortal feud with me, strike with your sword and shed my blood at once.

Urdu : Agar aap ki mujh se larai jhagra hai to apni talwar se aik hi bar mein mera kissa khatam karo.


شوم ساعت که شدم بر تو پدید

ای خنک آن را که روی تو ندید

Eng: Ill-omened (was) the hour I came into your sight: oh, happy he that never saw your face!

Urdu : Badnaseeb ( jis waqt ) mein aap ki nazar mein aaya tha, khush ho woh jis ne aap ka chehra kabhi nahi dekha.


بی‏جنایت بی‏گنه بی‏بیش و کم

ملحدان جایز ندارند این ستم‏

Eng: Without guilt, without sin, without (having done) anything great or small (even) the heretics hold not such oppression allowable.

Urdu: Baghair kisi gunah ke baray ya chotey, yahan tak ke mazhabi log is terhan ke zulm ki ijazat nahi rakhtay hain.


می‏جهد خون از دهانم با سخن

ای خدا آخر مکافاتش تو کن‏

Eng: Blood gushes from my mouth together with (my) words. O God, I beseech Thee, give him the retribution (which he deserves)!”

Urdu: Mere alfaaz ke sath mere mun se khoon aata hai, ae khuda, mein tujh se iltija karta hon ke is ko badla day ( jis ka woh haqdaar hai ).


هر زمان می‏گفت او نفرین نو

اوش می‏زد کاندر این صحرا بدو

Eng: Every instant he was uttering a new curse, (while) he (the rider) kept beating him and saying, “Run in this plain.”

Urdu: Har mauqa par woh aik nai laanat ka izhaar karta, jabkay woh sawaar usay pitta raha aur kehta raha, is maidan mein bhaag jao.


زخم دبوس و سوار همچو باد

می‏دوید و باز در رو می‏فتاد

Eng: Blows of the mace, and the rider (swift) as the wind! He (therefore) went on running and (now and) again falling on his face.

Urdu: Sawar lapka iski taraf gaddi ko chalata hua! woh ( lehaza ) bhagta chala gaya aur ( ab aur ) aik baar phir is ke chehray par gir para.


ممتلی و خوابناک و سست بد

پا و رویش صد هزاران زخم شد

Eng: He was full-fed and sleepy and fatigued: his feet and face became (covered with) a hundred thousand wounds.

Urdu: Woh pet bhare aur neend mein tha aur thaka huwa tha : is ke paon aur chehray zakhamo se dhake hue thay.


تا شبانگه می‏کشید و می‏گشاد

تا ز صفرا قی شدن بر وی فتاد

Eng: Till nightfall he (the rider) drove (him) to and fro, until vomiting caused by bile overtook him.

Urdu: Raat gaye tak is(sawar) idhar se udhar dauraya, yahan tak ke patt ki wajah se honay wali qay ne is ko qaboo karliya .


زو بر آمد خورده‏ها زشت و نکو

مار با آن خورده بیرون جست از او

Eng: All the things he had eaten, bad or good, came up from him: the snake shot forth from him along with what he had eaten.

Urdu: Is ne bura ya acha khaya woh sabhi cheeze isi ki taraf se ayen aur saanp bhi is ke sath nikal aya.


چون بدید از خود برون آن مار را

سجده آورد آن نکو کردار را

Eng: When he saw the snake outside of him, he fell on his knees before that beneficent man.

Urdu: Jab is ne bahar saanp dekha to woh is faida mand shakhs ke samnay ghutnon ke bal gir gaya .



سهم آن مار سیاه زشت زفت

چون بدید آن دردها از وی برفت‏

Eng: As soon as he saw the horror of that black, ugly, big snake, those griefs departed from him.

Urdu: Jaise hi is ne is siyah, badsoorat, barray saanp ki holnaki ko dekha, woh gham is se rukhsat hogaye .


گفت خود تو جبرییل رحمتی

یا خدایی که ولی نعمتی‏

Eng: “Truly,” said he, “you are the Gabriel of (Divine) mercy, or you are God, for you are the lord of bounty.

Urdu: Usne ne kaha waqai aap rehmat ke farishte Jibraiel hain, ya aap khuda hain, kyun ke aap fazl ke maalik hain .


ای مبارک ساعتی که دیدی‏ام

مرده بودم جان نو بخشیدی‏ام‏

Eng: Oh, blest (is) the hour that you saw me: I was dead, you have given me new life .

Urdu: Mubarak hai woh ghari jis waqt aap ne mujhe dekha , mein mar gaya tha, aap ne mujhe nai zindagi bakhshi .


تو مرا جویان مثال مادران

من گریزان از تو مانند خران‏

Eng: You (were) seeking me like mothers (in search of their children), I (was) fleeing from you like asses (donkey).

Urdu: Aap maaon ki terhan mujhe ( apne bachon ki talaash mein ) dhoond rahay the, mein ( gadhay ) ki terhan aap se bhaag raha tha .


خر گریزد از خداوند از خری

صاحبش در پی ز نیکو گوهری‏

Eng: The ass (donkey) flees from his master because of asininity, his owner (runs) after (him) because of good-nature.

Urdu: Gadha bewaqoofi ki wajah se apne maalik se bhaagta hai, iska malik iski bhale ke liye iske piche bhagta hai  .


نه از پی سود و زیان می‏جویدش

لیک تا در گرگش ندرد یا ددش‏

Eng: He seeks him, not on account of profit or loss, but in order that a wolf or (other) wild beast may not tear him.

Urdu: Woh naffa ya nuqsaan ki wajah se nahi balkay is ki talaash karta hai, kahin bheria ya dosra  jungli janwar usay phaar nah de .



ای خنک آن را که بیند روی تو

یا در افتد ناگهان در کوی تو

Eng: Oh, happy he that espies your face or suddenly lights upon your abode.

Urdu: oh, khush hai woh jo aap ke chehray ko daikhta hai ya achanak aap ke thikane ki taraf jata hai .


ای روان پاک بستوده ترا

چند گفتم ژاژ و بی‏هوده ترا

Eng: O you whom the pure spirit hath praised, how many foolish and idle words have I spoken to you!

Urdu: Ae khalis rooh jis ne tareef ki hai, mein ne tum se kitney be waqoof aur bekar alfaaz bolay!



ای خداوند و شهنشاه و امیر

من نگفتم جهل من گفت آن مگیر

Eng: O lord and emperor and amír, I spoke not, my folly spoke: do not punish that (offence).

Urdu: Ae rab, shenshah aur umro, mein ne baat nahi ki, meri bewaqoof boli : is ( mujrim ) ko saza nah do .


شمه‏ای زین حال اگر دانستمی

گفتن بی‏هوده کی تانستمی‏

If I had known a little of this matter, how could I have spoken foolish words?

Urdu: Agar mujhe is muamlay ka thora sa pata hota, to mein kaisay be waqoof alfaaz bol sakta tha .


بس ثنایت گفتمی ای خوش خصال

گر مرا یک رمز می‏گفتی ز حال‏

I should have spoken much praise of you, O man of good qualities, if you had given me a single hint as to the (actual) case;

Urdu: ae achay khoobiyon walay, mujhe aap ki bohat ziyada tareef karni chahiye thi, agar aap mujhe ( asal ) maamla ka aik ishara dete .


لیک خامش کرده می‏آشوفتی

خامشانه بر سرم می‏کوفتی‏

But you, keeping silence, showed perturbation and silently continued to beat me on the head.

Urdu: Lekin aap ne khamoshi ikhtiyar karte hue tashweesh ka muzahira kiya aur khamoshi se mere sir par maar pit karte rahay .



شد سرم کالیوه عقل از سر بجست

خاصه این سر را که مغزش کمتر است‏

Eng: My head became dizzy, the wits flew out of my head especially as this head has (but) little brain.

Urdu: Mera sir ko chakra aa gaya, aql mere sir se nikal gayi khaas tor par jab is sir mein thora sa dimagh hai .


عفو کن ای خوب روی خوب کار

آن چه گفتم از جنون اندر گذار

Eng: "Pardon, O man of goodly countenance and goodly behaviour: let pass that which I said in frenzy.”

Urdu: "Maaf karo, achay chehray aur achay sulooq ke aadmi : jo kuch mein ne ghusse se kaha tha usay Muaf karo."


گفت اگر من گفتمی رمزی از آن

زهره‏ی تو آب گشتی آن زمان‏

Eng: He answered, “If I had uttered a hint of it, your gall would instantly have turned to water.

Urdu: Is ne jawab diya," agar mein is ka ishara bhi deta to aap ka pathra fori tor par pani ki taraf mael hojata .


گر ترا من گفتمی اوصاف مار

ترس از جانت بر آوردی دمار

Eng: Had I told you the qualities of the snake, terror would have made you give up the ghost.”

Urdu: Agar mein aap ko saanp ki khususiyaat batata to dehshat aap ko maazi se dastbardaar kardeti .


مصطفی فرمود اگر گویم به راست

شرح آن دشمن که در جان شماست‏

Eng: Mustafá (Peace Be Upon Him)  said, ‘If I should tell aright the description of the enemy which is in your souls,

Urdu: Mustafa ( Sal-lallahu Allah alaihi wa-alehe wasallam ) ne kaha,' agar mein aap ki jaanun mein mojood dushman ki tafseel ko theek se bataun.


زهره‏های پر دلان هم بر درد

نه رود ره نه غم کاری خورد

Eng: The gall-bladders even of courageous men would burst: he (such a one) would neither go his way nor care for any work.

Urdu: Bahadur mardon ki bhi pathri phatt jati : woh nah to apna rasta ikhtiyar karta aur nah hi kisi kaam ka khayaal rakhta .


نه دلش را تاب ماند در نیاز

نه تنش را قوت روزه و نماز

Eng: Neither would there remain to his heart endurance in supplication, nor to his body strength for fasting and (ritual) prayer.

Urdu: Nah to dua ke sath is ke dil ko aaram hoga, aur nah hi is ke jism mein roza rakhnay aur namaz padhany ki taaqat hogi .


همچو موشی پیش گربه لا شود

همچو بره پیش گرگ از جا رود

Eng: He would become (good for) nothing as a mouse before a cat; he would be distraught as a lamb before a wolf.

Urdu: Woh kisi kam ka nahin bachega jaise chuha billi ka samne; woh bheria ke samnay bheer ki terhan ghabraye ga .


اندر او نه حیله ماند نه روش

پس کنم ناگفته تان من پرورش‏

Eng: No power to plan or move would remain in him: therefore I tend you without speaking.

Urdu: Is mein mansoobah bananay ya muntaqil karne ki koi taaqat baqi nahi rahay gi ; lehaza mein aap ko bataye baghair aisa kiya.


همچو بو بکر ربابی تن زنم

دست چون داود در آهن زنم‏

Eng: I am mute, like Bú Bakr-i Rabábí; I handle the iron, like David,

Urdu: mein goonga hon jaisay bú bakr-i rabábí; mein Hazrat Dawood (Peace Be Upon Him) ki terhan loha sambhaalta hon ,


تا محال از دست من حالی شود

مرغ پر برکنده را بالی شود

Eng: So that by my hand the (seemingly) impossible is brought to pass, and wings are restored to the bird whose plumes were torn away.

Urdu: Taakay mere haath se ( bzahir ) namumkin mumkin hojaye , parinday jiske par ukhad diye gaye the bahaal ho jaye .


چون ید الله فوق أیدیهم بود

دست ما را دست خود فرمود احد

Eng: Since there is (the text) the hand of Allah is above their hands, the One (Allah) has declared our hand to be His hand.

Urdu: Chunkay un ke hathon se oopar Allah ka haath hai lehaza Wahid ( Allah ) ne hamaray haath ko apna haath qarar diya hai .


پس مرا دست دراز آمد یقین

بر گذشته ز آسمان هفتمین‏

Eng: Therefore mine is surely a long hand that has passed beyond the Seventh Heaven.

Urdu: Lehaza mera yaqeenan aik lamba haath hai jo Satwen jannat se agay nikal gaya hai .


این صفت هم بهر ضعف عقلهاست

با ضعیفان شرح قدرت کی رواست‏

Eng: This characteristic, moreover, is on account of the weakness of (men’s) understandings: how is it possible to explain the (Divine) omnipotence to the weak?

Urdu: Is ke ilawa, yeh khasusiyat ( mardon ki ) Tafheem ki kamzoree ki wajah se hai : kamzoron ko ( khudai ) Qadir mutlaq ki wazahat karna kaisay mumkin hai ?



خود بدانی چون بر آری سر ز خواب

ختم شد و الله أعلم بالصواب‏

Eng: You will surely know when you lift your head from (this sensuous) sleep. ’Tis the end (of my discourse), and God knows best what is right.

Urdu: Jab aap ( is sansani khaiz ) neend se apna sir uthayen ge to aap ko yaqeenan pata chal jaye ga. yeh ( mere guftagu ka ) ekhtataam hai, aur khuda sahih jaanta hai ke kya sahih hai .



مر ترا نه قوت خوردن بدی

نه ره و پروای قی کردن بدی‏

Eng: “(If I had told you about the snake), you would not have been able to eat, nor would you have been capable of vomiting or cared (to do so).

Urdu: agar mein tumhe saanp ke baray mein bta deta, to aap nah kha paate, nah hi aap qay kar saktay ya qay karne ki soch sakte the.


می‏شنیدم فحش و خر می‏راندم

رب یسر زیر لب می‏خواندم‏

Eng: I heard (your) abuse and went on with my work; I kept repeating under my lip (breath), ‘O Lord, make (it) easy”!

Urdu: Mein ne ( aap ki ) bud sulooki ki aawaz suni aur apne kaam ke sath agay barh gaya. mein apne lab ke neechay dohrataa raha, ae rab, ( isay aasaan kar day ) 



از سبب گفتن مرا دستور نه

ترک تو گفتن مرا مقدور نه‏

Eng: I had not permission to speak of the cause, and I had not power to abandon you.

Urdu: Mujhe is wajah se baat karne ki ijazat nahi thi aur mujhe aap ko chorney ka ikhtiyar nahi tha .


هر زمان می‏گفتم از درد درون

اهد قومی إنهم لا یعلمون‏

Eng: From the grief in my heart I was saying continually, Guide my people; verily, they know not.

Urdu: Mere dil mein gham se mein musalsal kehta raha mere logon ki rahnumai kar be shak woh nahi jantay .


سجده‏ها می‏کرد آن رسته ز رنج

کای سعادت ای مرا اقبال و گنج‏

Eng: The man that had been delivered from woe was falling on his knees and saying, “O (thou who art) my bliss, O my fortune and treasure .

Urdu: Woh shakhs jo masaaib se nijaat paaya tha ghutnon ke bil gir kar ke raha tha, ae ( tum jo meri khushi ho ), meri khush qismati aur khazana .


از خدا یابی جزاها ای شریف

قوت شکرت ندارد این ضعیف‏

Eng: Thou wilt get rewards from God, O noble one; this weakling has not the power to thank thee.

Urdu: Ae buzurg tujh ko khuda se ajar miley ga, is kamzor mein aap ka shukriya ada karne ki taaqat nahi hai .


شکر حق گوید ترا ای پیشوا

آن لب و چانه ندارم و آن نوا

Eng: God will say thanks to thee, O leader; I have not the lips and the chin and the voice for that.”

Urdu: Khuda farmaye ga tera shukar, ae qaid ! is ke liye mere paas hont aur thorhee (chin) aur aawaz nahi hai .


دشمنی عاقلان زین‏سان بود

زهر ایشان ابتهاج جان بود

Eng: Of this fashion is the enmity of the wise: their poison is gladness to the soul.

Urdu: Is hal mein aqalmand ki dushmani hai, un ka zeher rooh ke liye khushi hai .


دوستی ابله بود رنج و ضلال

این حکایت بشنو از بهر مثال‏

Eng: The friendship of the fool is woe and perdition: hear this tale as a parable.

Urdu: Ahmaq ki dosti afsos aur barbadi hai, is daastaa’n ko tamseel ki hesiyat se suno .
